Italian midfielder Jorginho is set to be one of the most sought-after midfielders among the Premier League’s top clubs this summer. The Napoli man has been at the centre of his team’s fantastic run in Serie A this season, and offers the kind of versatility that would make him really suited to English football. A box-to-box midfielder who can also operate as a deep-lying playmaker, he can tackle, pass and control the tempo of games.
Both Manchester clubs are looking for a player of his pedigree, according to Manchester Evening News. United have still not found the right combination in the centre of the park, with Jose Mourinho rotating between Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Ander Herrera in games. Pogba still hasn’t hit the heights that his potential suggests, and Jorginho’s inclusion could free up more space for the Frenchman to operate with complete freedom in behind the frontline.
City midfielder Yaya Toure will leave the club at the end of the season after eight years at the club, Pep Guardiola confirmed yesterday, as reported here by Sky Sports. The Ivorian hasn’t played a big part in the first team in the last couple of years, but has been a mammoth figure at the club nevertheless. Moreover, Fernandinho is currently at the age of 33, and will slowly but surely start getting phased out of the first team. His current contract at the club runs out in 2020. The Brazilian has qualities very similar to Jorginho, and it is therefore no surprise that the latter is being lined up to replace Fernandinho at the Etihad Stadium.
Liverpool is another club in the running to sign Jorginho. The Reds will be losing Emre Can in the summer and even though Naby Keita will arrive from RB Leipzig, there is still potential for improvement in midfield. James Milner is getting on with his age, and Jordan Henderson has his limitations. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is primarily a winger, while Giorginio Wijnaldum has not yet completely fulfilled his potential in terms of goals and assists. If Liverpool want to make the leap from pretenders to genuine title contenders, they will need all the ability and tenacity they can in the centre of the park. According to the report, the club also have Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred and Nice’s Jean-Michel Seri on their list of potential targets.
According to MEN, Napoli are well aware of these European giants potentially coming for their player in the summer, and have valued him at £60 million. In a day and age where valuations are very much dictated by demand rather than fundamentals, this is hardly surprising.
Chelsea could also be a club that could target Jorginho, especially since current Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri has been heavily linked as the replacement for Antonio Conte next season. The Blues also have a lot of problems in the midfield, with neither Tiemoue Bakayoko nor Danny Drinkwater setting the world alight since arriving at Stamford Bridge last summer, for a combined £75 million.
